Even though Megadeth have announced that their 2026 self-titled album and global farewell tour will mark the end of the band's run, bassist James LoMenzo says the group's story might not be completely finished.
Speaking with Loud And Proud Italy, LoMenzo explained that while the band intends the current era to serve as a proper closing chapter, the idea of making new music in the future hasn't been ruled out.
"There's no law that says we can't make music as we're making music," LoMenzo said. "The great bands, the clasic bands that we love would go on the road, get a studio, record something, and eventually they'd have enough for half an album or so. That's entirely possible."
According to LoMenzo, the band hasn't actually discussed doing more music beyond the farewell campaign, but he emphasized that nothing legally or creatively prevents them from doing so.
Despite the hints that more music could someday surface, LoMenzo stressed that the farewell tour and album are not meant as a marketing gimmick – something famously associated with past "last tours" by artists like The Who, Kiss, and Mötley Crüe.
He noted that bandleader Dave Mustaine was especially committed to making the farewell genuine. "And Dave is adamant about this," LoMenzo explained. "We're not doing this to cash in or cash out. We're doing this to be sincere and to really bring the legacy to its closure."
That philosophy also influenced the decision to name the record Megadeth. "For that reason, calling the album Megadeth was the logical title," he added. "The culmination of the whole thing."
