The Gathering have announced their split with longtime vocalist Silje Wergeland after 16 years, marking the end of a major era for the band.

The Gathering have officially split with longtime vocalist Silje Wergeland, who fronted the Dutch rock outfit from 2009 through 2025.

Wergeland shared a statement on her social media confirming her departure and reflecting on her time with the band: "It's a new dawn and a new year. After 16 years of creating and playing great music with The Gathering, it's time to move on to new ventures. I have had so many awesome experiences and made great memories with this band that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

"I wish my band mates all the best for the future. Thanks for all the great support and the lovely conversations with all you wonderful fans around the globe. Lots of love, Silje."

Wergeland joined The Gathering in 2009 following the departure of original-era vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen, debuting on The West Pole and helping usher in a modern era for the band that blended atmospheric rock, progressive elements, and electronic textures.

Earlier this year, The Gathering reunited with Anneke van Giersbergen alongside other classic members for a series of summer shows celebrating the 30th anniversary of their 1995 album Mandylion. That reunion officially kicked off on August 27 at Doornroosje in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and marked the first time that lineup had performed together in decades.

At this time, there is no word on who will replace Wergeland, nor whether van Giersbergen's temporary return had any bearing on the decision for Wergeland to step away.
