MTV Rewind Website Brings Back 24/7 Music Video Channels – Including Headbangers Ball

After MTV killed its 24-hour music channels, a coder launched MTV Rewind — a free, ad-free web app streaming 33,000+ music videos.

At the very end of 2025, a quiet but seismic shift marked the true end of an era: MTV officially shut down its remaining 24-hour music video channels worldwide. For many fans, that closure felt symbolic — MTV had long since moved away from music in favor of reality TV, but this was the final nail in the coffin. And while most accepted it as inevitable, one programmer decided not to let it stand.

MTV Rewind is a free, browser-based web app created by a developer going by the name Flexasaurus Rex. Built with zero ads, zero algorithms, and zero unnecessary clutter, the project is a direct response to MTV’s shutdown — and a love letter to what the channel once represented.

The platform currently hosts more than 33,000 music videos, spanning six decades, organized into decade-based virtual “channels” that mimic the feel of classic MTV programming. Instead of endless scrolling or recommendation engines, MTV Rewind simply plays music videos. In addition to decade-focused channels, the app also includes:

  • Yo! MTV Raps
  • Headbangers Ball
  • A full Shuffle All mode for chaotic, cross-era viewing

It’s designed to be turned on and left running, recreating the experience of discovering music by chance rather than by algorithm.

Flexasaurus Rex explained that the project was born out of genuine loss when MTV’s final music channels were axed: "MTV was a cultural institution that changed music, fashion and youth culture. Then they stopped showing music videos and became reality TV. I felt a wave of sadness when the announcement hit. Nothing felt like it could fill that void. So I started coding. Built it in 48 hours: MTV REWIND."

The app is completely free, though users are encouraged to support Flexasaurus Rex directly if they’re able, as the project is independently run with no monetization baked in.
